7 Tips For Successful Metal Detecting With Jase Robertson
Learn Your History and Listen to Your Elders
To find the best relic hunting spots, you must know the history of the area you want to search. Relic hunting on land you know has a historical past will almost guarantee that you come across something exciting, even if it is merely an 80-year-old penny. Jase says the fun is in the hunt and putting lost items back into circulation.
Listening to your elders and those with metal detecting experience is also essential. These people have spent many years trying different techniques to get to where they are now.
Listening to a metal detectorist’s recommendations concerning best practices and advice for success can teach you a lot about where to search for relics and what techniques to use to find the best treasures.
Don’t Be Hasty While Searching
When you are in the beginning stages of your relic hunting adventures, a great way to familiarize yourself with your new equipment is to dig up every target signal you hear. Although there may be many that produce junk, it will help you learn what your device sounds like so you can differentiate between trash and treasure.
Take Full Advantage of Your Pinpointer
The pinpointer is a super handy tool. Jase recommends using a pinpointer to bring you directly to the target. When your metal detector gives off a signal, use your pinpointer to locate the target’s exact location quickly. The pinpointer is great for finding smaller pieces that may be hard to identify otherwise.
Keep Your Ears Open By Listening Carefully
As previously mentioned, learning what your device sounds like will be essential to tell what you are hovering over. Jase recommends listening for consistent, repeatable signals when looking for lost treasures.
Unclear, Scratchy Sounds Equal Iron
When hunting for relics, you don’t want to waste time digging up a bunch of iron. You will likely want to move along and listen for a different target if you hear sounds similar to a grunt with scratchiness. That is, once you are familiar enough with your equipment to make that call. When in doubt, dig it out.
Focus on Tones and Display Screen
Keeping an eye on your display screen and the target ID numbers and listening for clear, high-pitched tones will help hunt for lost relics below the surface.
Disrupt the Earth and Rescan
If you scan for lost relics and find a good target signal, it is helpful to use a shovel or small trowel to dig up the spot where you hear the target signal. Once you have disrupted the surface, rescan the pile of dirt and the hole to see if you can still hear the signal. When you hear this sound, your pinpointer will come in very handy.
Most of the time, it will lead you straight to your target. Pinpointers are great for this application and are extremely helpful when finding the precise location of a small relic such as a coin or piece of jewelry.
